022: The Grumble Free Year with Tricia Goyer

by | Jan 1, 2020

“The core of our heart can be gratitude or grumbling!

Grumbling can become a way of life. In a culture where more is better and instant gratification is valued, we must decide whether or not we will succumb to grumbling and complaining or recognize our blessed life.

In this episode, my friend and the author of The Grumble-Free Year: Twelve Months, Eleven Family Members, and One Impossible Goal, Tricia Goyer, shares her family’s journey of removing grumbling from their lives. They discovered that every failed plan, unmet expectation, comparison and desire for more is truly an opportunity to look to God and experience His peace.

Important Takeaways from Show

  • We naturally want ease and instant gratification which sets us up for discontentment.
  • Whether it is loud or quiet, obvious or discrete, we all have a grumble style.
  • The desire for more makes us forget what we already have.
  • Comparison always results in grumbling.
  • Grumbling focuses on the problem rather than a solution.
  • Every time something doesn’t go the way we planned, we have an opportunity to grumble or give thanks.
  • Pause and invite God into the situation rather than rushing to complain.
  • Take time in God’s presence to evaluate what is at the root of your grumbling and discontentment.
  • Only God can change our hearts. Pray for His Spirit to work in you to bring His fruit.
  • Help your kids get in touch with Jesus, rather than focusing on altering their behavior.
  • Our words are powerful. How we talk and behave is linked to our testimony and influence for Christ.
  • Every time you are tempted to grumble, turn to God and thank Him for what He has done in your life.
  • Intentionally notice and praise your kids when they are doing something well.

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.” ~ Philippians 2:14-16

"Grumbling is a lack of trust in God and His good plans for our lives." - Tricia Goyer TLR 022
