“You are loved no matter your past experiences or mistakes!”
Have you ever felt the pressure to uphold a certain image? Many of us have learned how to pretend and perform in front of others, wearing a mask and living a life we were never created to live. We can be so afraid to admit our brokenness and allow others in, but that is exactly where God wants to bring healing.
In this episode, Ashley Abercrombie, author of Rise of the Truth Teller: Own Your Story, Tell it Like it is, and Live with Holy Gumption, shares her story of learning to live out loud, allowing others to share in her story and to be real with her as well.

Important Takeaways from Show
- “There is not greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you” – Maya Angelou
- As we share our stories, we give people permission to share theirs as well.
- As we pursue wholeness over perfection, we discover we don’t have to pretend and perform. We don’t have to lie to live.
- We can be loved even though we’ve made mistakes and in spite of the things that have happened to us.
- Living bound by hatred and unforgiveness only leads to shame. God wants to help us break free and experience His life-altering grace.
- Give yourself permission to:
- Admit to God that you’re broken
- Own the fact that you’re not perfect
- Suspend judgment about yourself and others
- Receive God’s grace
- If we are not changing, we are not becoming like Jesus.
- “I don’t have to find myself, I can allow God to reveal what He’s always had in mind.” ~ Joanna
- Don’t create yourself in your own image – let God make you into the image of Christ.
- Ask: God, what do you want to deal with?
- Listen: God’s leading via internal impressions, Scripture, faith community, service, solitude, worship, and prayer.
- We are not free agents, we are part of a community.
- The Lord knows exactly where you are. He knows exactly what you have and what you need.
- Living with Holy Gumption is not contingent on what you have or don’t have. It’s found in knowing you are uniquely created to be right where you are – you have something to give to the world!
Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. ~ Matthew 10:39
