“Life shakes us up. Abiding settles us down!”
In this episode, my friend and mentor, Jodi Detrick, shares from her new devotional, “The Settled Soul: Tenaciously Abiding with a Tender God”. She shares powerful truths and practical steps for an abiding life amidst the chaos and challenges in life. Jesus invites each one of us to unpack our entire lives and fully reside with Him.
No matter what is going on around us, we can live with peace and purpose by staying close to Jesus. Whether you are in a difficult pruning season, a quiet and seemingly dormant season or an abundant and fruitful season, settle in with Jesus.

Important Takeaways from Show
- Not only does Jesus abide in us, but we are invited to abide in Him
- Abiding literally means “home” – we are invited to unpack our entire lives and make ourselves at home with Jesus
- Abiding also means “remain” – He asks us to stay attached and settle in
- Like a Gardener, God cares for the us, lifts us up, prunes us and knows exactly what we need
- The Father is a Gardener who is hands on and willing to get close even in the mess
- The Gardener is also a Father who tends us with a tender heart
- The father of the prodigal son shows us how God draws us to Himself and offers us all that He has (Luke 15:11-32)
- Discontentment and disappointment in ourselves often leads to feeling unsettled
- The God who never grows weary is not tired of you (Isaiah 40:28)
- The dormant seasons when we don’t see movement are crucial to our growth
- Like vines in a vineyard, we depend on one another to grow
- Don’t let your wounds decide your faith
- When you are wounded by life, you need the Life Giver
- Make peace with the unfinished – every plant starts out small and incomplete
- God is building a grand work of eternity in your life
- There is always new depth and more of Jesus to discover
- Keep showing up and tending your connection with Jesus
- As we tend the connection, fruit naturally grows
Six Simple Practices of Abiding
1. Think about Jesus
2. Talk with Jesus
3. Talk about Jesus
4. Love Jesus and let Him love you
5. Trust Jesus and believe what He tells us
6. Engage meaningfully with others who love Jesus
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing… By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
~ John 15:5,8-9
