Have you ever wondered how the Bible fits together? Well, I have a reading plan for you!
Using a plan from Blue Letter Bible (which is much simpler than other chronological plans), we’ll read scripture portions in the order Bible scholars believe events occurred. Rather than the current biblical format based on genres (see video below), this approach will add historical context to our reading, but without having to turn to tiny portions like some plans require.
We’ll get to see what was going on in David’s life when he wrote many of his Psalms. We’ll also read eye witness accounts of the same story as told in different gospels. It’s going to make the Bible come alive in brand new ways as we read the Word in historical order.

How the Reading Plan Works
In order to get through the Bible in a year, we’ll be reading 3-4 chapters a day – sometimes less, sometimes a little more. This is a lot more than we usually do (most of my reading plans have been a chapter a day), but I really believe its going to be a rich time as we read chronologically.
As always, don’t read the Bible just to check it off your Good-Christian to-do list. Read the Bible to hear from God.
That’s why I’ve created the reading journal. It’s a place where you can dialogue with the Lord about what you’ve read and capture the things He’s spoken to your heart. Here are the instructions I give inside the journal:
1. Before you begin, invite the Holy Spirit to remove any preconceived ideas so that you can receive a fresh word from the Lord.
2. Read the assigned scripture portions prayerfully, expecting God to speak.
3 . After reading the assignment, do the following:
- Note the portions of scripture you read that day
- Find a verse(s) to meditate on & write it word-for-word, including the reference
4. In the “How it impressed me” section, respond to what you feel the Lord is saying through His Word. Here are a few ways you can do that:
- Write the verse as a prayer or paraphrase it in your own words
- Respond with thoughts about the reading
- Record any questions you have and ask the Lord for understanding
- Note revelations about God and His character – as well as ways to apply what you’ve read
5. Take it all to the Lord in prayer – including any needs you might have (see prayer pages in back).
6. If you are part of my Facebook Bible Reading Community, leave a comment in the daily thread which lists the Bible reading assignments.
Throughout the day, allow your heart and mind to return to the truth the Holy Spirit has illuminated. Cultivate a holy dialogue and ongoing conversation with God about what He’s shown you.
Print Instructions: To add pages to this journal, print off pages 9-24 as many times as needed.
