Having a Mary Spirit
Allowing GOD to Change Us from the Inside Out
You long to serve God with grace and strength, to reflect Christ in every word and action. Yet you find yourself continually struggling to bring that vision to life in your daily walk.
About Having a Mary Spirit
At our very core, every one of us is a “twisted sister” within whom the flesh and spirit battle constantly for control. We are afflicted with spiritual schizophrenia, the disconnect between our good-girl desire to put Jesus first and our bad-girl realities that crowd our thoughts and push him out of the way.
In this life-changing book, Joanna Weaver, directs your gaze past your own shortcomings to the God who stands ready, willing, and able to make a new woman out of you. She equips you with biblical insights and practical tools to partner with Christ, inviting Him into the hidden places of your soul and giving Him full permission to redeem and renovate.

And her commitment to biblical truth reminds us God will be with us every step of the way. I promise you’ll emerge from this reading experience a changed woman!”
“Because of the wisdom you share in your book, I have been able to begin to grasp how deep and how wide God’s love for me really is. The freedom that comes from resting in His love is unbelievable. The practical steps that you provide, and the no excuses approach you gently use, have helped a number of women begin to walk in God’s love.”
“Awesome, amazing, convicting relevant, and timely” were some of the adjectives we used to describe the book. In our years of facilitating Bible study, we have run across so many women who need this teaching! We are excited to see how the Lord will use your book to bring the women to a new understanding of what it means ‘to walk in the Spirit.’”
“You have hit the nail on the head with your book, dear sister. You have so perfectly articulated what my battle has been. Until now, I couldn’t even get my mind around what the problem was. I couldn’t even very well explain it to my friends, much less understand it myself. No kidding, it’s as if you climbed inside my head and saw my personal struggles.”

The Backstory
After finishing Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, I was ready to write a completely different book. But no matter how hard I tried, that book wouldn’t come.
A six-month sabbatical from writing turned into six years of intense writer’s block. Along with that came an intense crucible time in my own personal life.
Through a falling-out with some very dear friends, and the removal of man’s approval, God began showing me ugly places in my heart where my flesh had asserted her authority over His. Core issues from my childhood and fault lines in my psyche that left me vulnerable to Satan’s attacks.
Everything finally culminated during a frustrating time in our church building program.
It was then God whispered to my heart, “You’ve got a Martha spirit, Joanna. You’re a good girl wanting to do good things, but you are running ahead of me. You are doing this in your own strength, and as a result your work is cloaked in your flesh … and your flesh ain’t that pretty!”
It was a hard truth to hear, but God is kind enough to reveal so He can heal. All we have to do is agree with the diagnosis. Dr. Jesus will bring the cure!
My second book in the Bethany trilogy, Having a Mary Spirit: Allowing God to Change Us from the Inside Out was birthed out of those difficult six years, and it outlines lessons on how we can partner with God in the transformation we need.
Looking back, I wouldn’t trade that dark night of my soul for anything in the world. While, like Paul, I have not attained all that I want to be or should be. Yet, thank God, I am no longer what I was.
Isn’t it amazing how God takes the very things the enemy means for our destruction and uses them for our construction … the all-important process of making you and I less like us and more like Jesus!
