8 Tips for a Fulfilling Devotional Time- Tip 1 | Guest Post by Angela Howard

When I attended North Central University one of the
required courses was a class called “Devotional Life.”  The staff at the school had great intentions,
knowing how vital it is to develop intimacy with Jesus, and they made an effort
to facilitate that.  Unfortunately, the
class fell flat for some students and was mockingly dubbed “Emotional Strife.”

Have you ever felt discouraged when trying and then failing
to establish a quiet time with the Lord?
aHI’ve found that a
vibrant devotional life isn’t something found in a textbook; it is all about a
relationship with Christ and learning to find a rhythm to life where Jesus is a
part of everything you do.  That is why Joanna
and I wanted to share what we have learned through our journeys so that you will
be inspired to begin or perhaps begin again to spend time At the Feet of Jesus.

Tip#1:  Determine what time works best for you.

Although I’m sure all the morning people out there would
claim otherwise, there isn’t a holy hour of the day when heaven meets
earth.  Play to your strengths and look
for a period of the day when you are least likely to be interrupted.  Try it for a while; if it doesn’t work well,
try another time until you find what works best for you.

When I was a young(er) mother nap times were my golden
opportunity for prayer and study.  Maybe
your lunch hour is the perfect fit.  We
are all in different seasons of life so ask the Lord for wisdom and remind
yourself that your time
with God
doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.
Eliminating distractions is a huge help.  This summer I realized that my morning ritual
of watching the news while I ate my breakfast was stealing at least an hour out
of my morning.  This distraction would
end up pushing my prayer time later and later into the day.  Maybe you’re like me and need to unplug from
technology to gain some focus. It could be as simple as finding a quiet place
that doesn’t have constant reminders of the pressing demands of life.

If you have lost your focus the best place to start is at
the feet of JesusThere you will find comfort, hope, peace
and healing.  God is faithful.  He will meet you where you are.

You
will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah
29:13 (
NASB)

What has helped you in your devotional time?  We would love to hear from you!
