033: Mama Bear Apologetics with Hillary Morgan Ferrer

“Every Christian needs to understand why they believe what they believe!”

Moms, we’ve all experienced a time when our little one is about to get bulldozed on the playground and that “mama bear” protective instinct kicks in. What if we were that protective over the hearts and minds of our children, determined to give them every tool necessary to fight the influx of false ideas and come out standing on a strong foundation? In a culture that is constantly changing, we have been given this responsibility of teaching our kids how to form their beliefs about what is true and what is false. God is calling us to stop standing idly by and instead “Let [our] reasonableness be known to everyone” because “the Lord is at hand!” (Philippians 4:5 ESV).

In this episode, Hillary Morgan Ferrer, founder of Mama Bear Apologetics, shares how we can intentionally build a moral foundation for our kids. When we know what Scripture says, we can more easily identify when it is being misused and share God’s truth in love. Hillary’s new book, Mama Bear Apologetics™: Empowering Your Kids to Challenge Cultural Liesbreaks down the lies that are perpetrating our culture and how the Bible refutes each one. The good news is we don’t have to know everything to begin building this kind of foundation our kids can stand on. God wants to help you, my friend!

Important Takeaways from Show

  • Apologetics: to give an offense or reason for something
  • The Bible is not just authoritative; it is proven, reasonable and true
  • Good apologetics separates the people from the ideas; demolishing ideas, not people
  • Try to build bridges of agreement before dismantling false ideas and areas of disagreement
  • The Mama Bear doesn’t hate other ideas as much as she loves her children
  • Emotionalism (the more I feel something the more true it is) is a dangerous theology
  • The enemy does not want you to be reasoned and informed with the truth
  • Our kids need to know why the Bible is trustworthy and worth suffering for
  • Culture today assigns false definitions to God’s morals (e.g. just, love)
  • Pray for your kids to have a personal encounter with Jesus
  • Seek to give your children tools for Biblical thinking, rather than make everything black and white without reasoning
  • Make room for your kids to ask questions
  • Be the first to address objections to Christianity with your kids and how to refute them
  • You don’t have to understand everything at once; it’s ok to take information in bite sizes
  • Learn your kids’ personality types and identify how you can best help them understand and experience God
  • Teach the “thinker” that God is noble and that there is enough influence to reveal He exists and He is good
  • Teach the “feeler” that God is transformative and trustworthy
  • Teach the “doer” that God moves and acts, often through us, and get them involved in projects that show radical transformation

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. ~ Colossians 2:8 NIV
